Asbestos Detectives

Inspecting residential and commercial buildings for asbestos.

HomeText Box: Why the business was started.
There is rightly a growing concern by the general public of the health risks associated with exposure to asbestos fibre contained in many common building products. Exposure to air borne asbestos fibre can result in certain lung conditions such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques and other pleural diseases. Some of these are fatal. There are recorded cases where even casual exposure to asbestos fibre has caused lung disease.
There is also increasing pressure from various community groups and the legal sector to include mandatory inspection of all buildings for asbestos content and determine associated risk.
Asbestos Detectives Pty Ltd was established in response to these concerns.
Because of their unique nature (high strength, excellent durability, good chemical resistance, flexibility and fire resistance) asbestos fibres were put to many different uses, such as friction products, thermal insulation, fire resistant clothing and manufacture of pipes and building products. The most common products in the public domain are building materials. These include, internal and external wall cladding, roofing, eave lining, flooring, moulded products and thermal insulation. The use of these products was extensive. Virtually every domestic and commercial building constructed prior to 1984 contains varying amounts of asbestos cement building products. A common name used for external wall cladding during this time was Fibro. There is also a high likelihood that some use of these products continued beyond 1984 as old stock was phased out of the market.             Continued...
